UK CV preparation for international students: a practical starting checklist

Prepare a focused CV for a UK role using real evidence from study, projects and work, with a checklist for tailoring and checking your application.

Begin with a target role

Choose an actual role before rewriting your CV. Read its duties and essential criteria, then identify which parts of your experience are relevant. A general CV often hides the evidence a particular employer needs.

Create a working list of examples from employment, volunteering, projects and study. Use only experience you can explain accurately. A degree title alone does not show how you would carry out the work.

Describe your contribution clearly

For each relevant example, state the situation, your own action and the result. Explain the scale where you know it, such as the number of people involved or the length of a project. Do not invent figures when you do not have records.

If a project was completed by a group, distinguish your contribution from the group’s overall achievement. Be ready to explain your decisions and what you learned during an interview.

Make the document easy to read

Use clear headings and a straightforward layout. Prioritise the evidence that matches the role, and follow the employer’s requested format and application instructions. Check that exported files keep their formatting and that links work.

  • Check spelling, dates and contact details.
  • Use concise descriptions rather than long lists of adjectives.
  • Explain qualifications and experience in terms relevant to the role.
  • Remove private information that is unnecessary for the application.

Check before you submit

Read the advert again and confirm that your application addresses the essential criteria. Check whether the employer requires a separate form, statement or portfolio. A CV does not replace other requested materials.

Give accurate answers to any work-permission questions and check official guidance where needed. Career training cannot guarantee employment, employer sponsorship or an immigration outcome. Keep a copy of each application so you can prepare consistently for an interview.
