Statistics and econometrics tutoring: a checklist for university students

Prepare for statistics or econometrics tutoring with a checklist covering concepts, model interpretation, practice questions and independent revision.

Identify whether the difficulty is mathematical, statistical or practical

A statistics question can become difficult at several different stages. You may be unsure what a probability means, how to rearrange an equation, which method fits a question, or how to explain a software output. Write down the first step you cannot justify rather than saying that the whole topic is confusing.

Bring one attempted practice problem. Highlight the point where you stopped and explain what you thought the question was asking. This lets a tutor separate a missing prerequisite from a difficulty with the current topic.

Explain the result before focusing on software

For a regression exercise, practise describing the variables, their units and the question the model addresses. Then explain what a coefficient represents in that particular model. A coefficient in one specification cannot automatically be interpreted in the same way in another.

Distinguish an observed relationship from a causal claim. Ask which assumptions your module requires, what the model can support and what it leaves uncertain. Use the terminology and methods taught in your own module rather than adding a more complicated technique just because software offers it.

Make a reproducible practice pack

Use a small practice dataset that you are permitted to share, the relevant instructions and your own calculations or code. Remove personal information and avoid sending restricted research data. Record the software and version if the problem depends on a particular command.

  • Write the learning objective and the exact error or confusing output.
  • Keep your original attempt so you can compare your reasoning afterwards.
  • Ask to work through a fresh example rather than receive a completed assessed answer.
  • Finish with a short explanation of the result in your own words.

Check what you can do without the tutor

After the session, try a similar question with different values. Explain why you chose the method, what assumptions matter and how you would report the result. If you can only reproduce the original answer, return to the reasoning rather than adding more questions.

Use permitted practice exercises and follow your university assessment rules. Tutoring can explain concepts and help organise revision; it should not produce assessed answers for you.
