Online or face-to-face university tutoring in London: how to choose

Compare online and London face-to-face university tutoring by study habits, travel, materials, session preparation and booking details.

Choose around the task you need to practise

Begin with the work: discussing a text, checking your understanding of a model, practising calculations or improving a presentation. Think about which format lets you show your own reasoning clearly. Neither format is automatically better for every student or subject.

If you need to move between code, data and notes, confirm how you will share those materials. If you prefer working on paper, ask how the tutor will review handwritten steps in either format.

Count preparation and travel as part of the session

For a London appointment, consider the full journey, room confirmation and time to arrive. An appointment-only venue requires an agreed location and booking; confirm these before travelling.

For online tutoring, check the meeting instructions, connection and tools in advance. Share only relevant files you are permitted to share. Do not give a tutor your university login details.

Compare the written booking details

Ask for the session length, topic, tutor availability, total price and cancellation terms in writing. Check whether any additional costs apply to the particular booking. Compare the same type of session instead of comparing an individual lesson with an unrelated group package.

Use the college’s current service and fee pages for published prices, and obtain confirmation for your specific requirements. Availability and venue arrangements should be confirmed before payment.

Evaluate learning rather than convenience alone

After a session, test whether you can explain the idea or complete a new practice task independently. Record what helped and what remains unclear. This gives you a reason to continue, change the format or focus the next session.

Whichever format you choose, the assessed work remains yours. Discuss what feedback your university permits before requesting help with an assessment.

Your next step

Tell Albion Gateway College your subject, current difficulty and preferred learning format. We will discuss your requirements and confirm availability before any booking.
