How to choose a UK university module tutor: a practical checklist

Compare subject expertise, academic integrity, tutoring formats and preparation steps before choosing help with a UK university module.

Start with the module, not a general subject

A business student may need help with corporate finance modelling, whereas another student needs to understand a research methods lecture. Write down the university module name, degree level and the one concept you are struggling to apply.

A strong first enquiry identifies a learning gap rather than asking a tutor to complete your assessment. For example, ask for help interpreting an example statistical output or practising a new question.

Check tutor experience and explain the expected outcome

Ask whether the tutor has relevant knowledge of the specific topic, not just a broad degree title. Describe what you should be able to do after a session: independently explain a method, plan revision or solve a practice exercise.

Request clarity about the lesson format, session length, cancellation terms and how learning progress will be checked. Tutor allocation and availability should be confirmed rather than assumed.

Choose between online and London face-to-face support

Online university tutoring can be practical when you need to share a worked example or cannot travel across London. Face-to-face tutoring may suit learners who prefer working through questions on paper. Pick a format based on your course, your schedule and any required accessibility arrangements.

For London sessions, request confirmation of the exact appointment venue, room availability and total fee before making travel arrangements.

Protect academic integrity and your privacy

A tutor can explain concepts, provide additional practice and discuss your learning approach within your university rules. They must not write submitted coursework, take a test or guarantee a grade. Check your institution's current academic integrity policy before sharing assessment work.

Do not send your university account password, personal identification documents or confidential information. Share only the module information needed to assess the enquiry.

Your next step

Tell us your university module, the topic you want to understand and your preferred online or London teaching format. Our team can review what support may be appropriate.
