Identify your own research question and what you need to learn
Dissertation support should help you understand research decisions, not replace your independent work. You might need to distinguish exploratory and explanatory questions, understand how a literature review informs your design, or compare qualitative and quantitative methods.
Describe the stage of your project and the skill you want to improve. A focused learning objective helps a tutor propose relevant explanations and exercises without taking authorship of the dissertation.
Methods tutoring can focus on transferable skills
A methodology session might explain sampling choices, interview designs, research ethics, descriptive statistics or limitations. Practice with synthetic examples, published research or tutor-created exercises instead of asking someone else to analyse and write your actual assessment.
Where feedback on your own draft is permitted, agree its scope under your university rules. Your supervisor and university remain the authorities on what outside assistance is acceptable.
Avoid ghostwriting, fabricated data and guaranteed results
A coaching provider must not write the dissertation for you, invent data, impersonate you or guarantee a classification. Requests for those services create academic misconduct risks.
If you have collected personal information for a research project, check ethical approval, consent and data handling requirements before sharing anything with an external tutor. Anonymise examples where appropriate and permitted.
Prepare for an initial learning consultation
Bring the topic area, degree level, current methodological questions, a summary of your own attempts and any relevant guidance from your institution. Never provide university login details or confidential participant data.
Discuss realistic next learning steps: a reading strategy, an independent practice exercise or a session devoted to understanding your chosen method.
