Academic English for seminars: prepare a contribution you can explain

Practise academic English for university seminars with a reading note, a clear contribution, clarification phrases and a short weekly routine.

Prepare one useful point from the reading

Instead of trying to memorise a whole article, make a short note with its main claim, one supporting example and one question. Keep your summary separate from a quotation so you know which words are yours.

Rehearse explaining that point aloud in simple language. If you cannot explain a term, check it before adding more complex vocabulary. The aim is a contribution you understand, not a speech filled with unfamiliar phrases.

Structure a short contribution

Use a simple sequence: state your point, identify the reading or example behind it and explain why it matters to the discussion. You can then ask a question or invite a different interpretation.

Practise both a short version and a longer version. This makes it easier to contribute when the discussion moves quickly and expand if someone asks you to explain.

Practise asking for clarification

Prepare phrases you can use naturally: “Could you explain what you mean by that term?” or “Have I understood correctly that…?” Asking a specific question is more useful than pretending to follow an unclear point.

When disagreeing, focus on the claim or evidence. Explain which part you interpret differently and give a reason. You do not need to sound like a native speaker to make a clear and respectful contribution.

Build a repeatable practice routine

Choose one reading each week, speak from brief notes and listen back to a recording you make for yourself. Notice whether the main point is clear and whether examples support it. Pick one improvement for the next attempt.

If you request academic English support, bring your goal, a sample of your own work and the type of seminar you attend. Ask to practise the skill with new examples so you can use it independently.
